You are not usually short of ideas. So why do so many strategies fail to get off the ground? SMEs struggle because they have not created the clarity needed in complex situations and their leadership isn’t fully aligned, priorities blurred, accountability drifts and then execution fails.

 

Clarity

Usually there will be a some areas which appear complex. I will help work through these and create 2 to 3 scenarios which help clarify the way forward. This helps to be clear on what you are not going to do.

SME businesses often find themselves with too many initiatives and yet growth is stalled. Clear strategic focus can unlock this.

Strategy development shapes the direction of all your resources for the next 3-5 years in your business and therefore it is vital that you give if the time and focus it deserves.

Creating a plan, getting in relevant and in depth data analysis in advance of discussions is key. Rehearsing your Vision / Mission / Value is important and taking time to shape the key areas for strategic growth ahead of an offsite. I can help structure the programme as well as facilitate at the offsite.

 
 

PREPARATION

Being ready for the off-site is key. In addition to the core requirement of historical financial performance could be a SWOT, PESTLE, Ansoff Matrix, competitor analysis, etc.

This is often a good time to gain the latest insights from your clients too. Surprising though it may sound often SMEs are not as clear as to really why their clients buy from them.

Your team will have different thoughts about the direction of the business. My role is to

  • challenge assumptions

  • manage strong personalities

  • force strategic choices

  • create alignment in the leadership team

Realism is essential and link of strategic ambition and how it can be resourced will be a focus in the latter part of the offsite.

 

THE outcome

By the end of the offsite there will a clear understanding of the strategic direction for the next 3-5 years.

This will be set out in your strategic goals (around 4-6).

These will be honed as a clear execution plan is created for year one of the plan period including key deliverable and accountabilities

I will provide both the raw output generated over the offsite plus a written version for circulation to attendees.

About me

I’ve led both private and public businesses as CEO, Managing Director and President working in both product business and services.
